Two piano-playing brothers, one a cynic with serious artistic leanings, and the other a perpetually optimistic, but workmanlike player, audition a number of vocalists in order to spice up their stale lounge act. When they find a beautiful and talented young singer, their career starts to pick up again. But jealousies, both romantic and professional, begin to appear and threaten their newfound success.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
Real-life siblings Beau and Jeff Bridges star as the eponymous Fabulous Baker Boys. Musical prodigies both, the Bakers have long been teamed as a twin-piano act, with the less talented Frank (Beau Bridges) coasting on the skills of his brilliant younger brother Jack (Jeff Bridges). Their career dwindling to nickel-and-dime dates in second-rate clubs, the Bakers decide that they need a female vocalist to boost their popularity. They select auditioner Susie Diamond (Michelle Pfeiffer), who in addition to being a gifted songstress is drop-dead gorgeous. The newly renovated Baker Boys act scores a success, which is inevitably threatened by Susie's growing popularity and by Jack's insistence upon pursuing an affair with the girl. The "big money" scene in Fabulous Baker Boys is, of course, Michelle Pfeiffer's sensuous table-top rendition of Makin' Whoopee, but the moment that stands out most prominently in the memories of most filmgoers is the scene in which a disgruntled Pfeiffer compares the sappy standard Feelings to a plate of parsley: neither good nor bad, just "there. --- Hal Erickson

The Fabulous Baker Boys was Steve Kloves' first time in the director's seat and only his second screenwriting credit, but nowhere does the inexperience show. He confidently crafts a story rich with realistic characters, genuine feeling, and an ample amount of beautiful music. Not a lot actually happens in the film, but that's part of its charm. Casting real-life brothers Jeff Bridges and Beau Bridges made Kloves' job a lot easier: they're so convincing that one wonders whether the story might have touched on any actual rivalries between them. Michelle Pfeiffer earned an Oscar nomination for one of her finest performances; her classic piano-top rendition of "Makin' Whoopee" is enough to make the film worth seeing. Cinematographer Michael Ballhaus also deserves credit for his work here, bringing a sensual glow to the film and the performers. --- Matthew Doberman
