LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
Burt Reynolds stars as the Bandit in this seminal portrayal of rough-ridin', beer-swillin', sheriff-dodgin', trouble-chasin' truckers. The Bandit's has taken on his craziest haul yet: a trailer full of Coors beer. If he can deliver the goods from Texarcana to Atlanta within forty-eight hours, he'll be $80,000 richer. Hilarious mayhem ensues, however, when the Bandit falls for a runaway bride (Sally Field). As they push toward Atlanta, the two have to evade Fields' vengeful father-in-law, Texas Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason as the maniac "Smokey" of the title). The stakes get higher and the car chases more frenzied in this hysterical romp through the American highways. Charismatic performances by Reynolds and Gleason made this a huge box office draw. ITA winner. Academy Award Nominations: Best Film Editing.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
"Smoky," aka Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason), is the prospective father-in-law of unwilling bride Carrie (Sally Field). The Bandit (Burt Reynolds), a maverick race car driver, makes an $80,000 bet that he can transport a shipment of Coors beer from Texarkana, Texas to Atlanta within 28 hours. It's important to note that in 1977, it was illegal to sell the Coors brand east of the Mississippi River without a permit; if we don't note that, then the plot won't make sense at times. Already in danger of arrest from redneck lawmen like Buford T. Justice, Bandit furthers his chances at a stiff jail term when he offers a ride to Carrie, who hopes to escape her unwanted wedding to Justice's boy. The rest of the film is one long chase, not quite as subtle as a Road Runner/Coyote cartoon, not quite as restrained as a Three Stooges comedy. Universally panned by critics upon its first release, Smokey and the Bandit reaped something in the neighborhood of $50,000,000 at the box office. --- Hal Erickson

A huge hit for Burt Reynolds, this was the first in the series of inane car chase movies that the star later believed had damaged his career. The lightweight script concerns the efforts of Reynolds' racing-car driver to win 80,000 dollars by driving 28 straight hours to pick up a shipment of Coors beer. The direction, by veteran stunt coordinator Hal Needham, is non-existent. It looks as if he usually used the first take of a scene in which the actors haven't yet learned their lines, and not even Jackie Gleason or Sally Field escape unscathed. One gets the feeling of an ongoing party which was occasionally halted to shoot a scene or two. However, Reynolds is perfect in his part, and his trademark charm does shine through at times. The driving stunts are also beautifully executed, so that the film isn't a total loss. They just should have cut out all the dialogue. --- Michael Costello
