From the best-selling novel by Peter Benchley, Steven Spielberg directed this thrill ride of terror. During the height of beach season, the Massachusetts resort town of Amity Island is terrorized one summer by surprise attacks from a great white shark. Three unlikely partners team up to hunt down the rogue and destroy it: the new chief of police from New York (Roy Scheider), a young university-educated oceanographer (Richard Dreyfuss), and a crusty old-time fisherman (Robert Shaw). The film shoot was notoriously difficult for the young Spielberg, who had directed only one feature film before JAWS. The mechanical shark seldom operated correctly, and Spielberg was frequently forced to create the idea of terror without actually showing the shark. However, after the film premiered it went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time--surpassing THE GODFATHER and becoming the first film to gross more than a hundred million dollars. Composer John Williams created the score to JAWS, which has since become a well-known theme of impending doom. Ron and Valerie Taylor were responsible for filming live sharks in Australia; their sequences were later mixed with footage of the mechanical shark.

Jaws single-handedly turned the "Summer Season" into the most profitable and desirable release time of the movie year. The film is adapted by Peter Benchley, Carl Gottleib and an uncredited Howard Sackler from Benchley's best-seller. The scene is Amity Island, somewhere in Martha's Vineyard. A summer girl vacationer (played by stuntwoman Susan Backlinie) goes for a nude swim late one night. She never returns. The next morning, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) is summoned to the beach, where the girl's mangled remains have washed ashore. Mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), anxious not to lose the all-important July 4th tourist trade, insists that Brody downplay the incident and write off Chrissie's demise as a motorboat mishap. Visiting undersea expert Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) has a different opinion: he believes that the girl was the victim of a Great White shark. Proof of Hooper's allegation comes a few days later, when a small boy is devoured by a shark while swimming. Seeking a quick solution, the mayor orders all local fishermen to keep a watch for the rogue shark. Only grizzled old sea dog Quint (Robert Shaw), a veteran sharkhunter, is willing to take on the job, but the mayor finds his price much too high. When a shark is killed and hauled in by a pair of boaters, the mayor announces that the crisis is over, but gadfly Hooper insists that the Great White is still at large. On July 4th Hooper is proven correct again, as the huge shark invades the local estuary and lunches on one of the tourists. Now the film moves several miles off shore, as Quint, Hooper, and a seasick Brody, bobbing about in Quint's ramshackle boat, prepare to do battle with the Great White. Jaws earned half a billion dollars worldwide upon its first release. John Williams won an Oscar for his chilling musical score. While the special-effects shark (nicknamed "Bruce" by the filmmakers) isn't quite as convincing as it once was, but Jaws is still head and shoulders above all its imitators-not to mention its two tepid sequels. However, Spielberg and editor Verna Fields turned the liability of an obviously fake Bruce into a potent source of fear by leaving the shark unseen until the final battle. Instead, swift cuts between swimmers above the surface and underwater shark's-eye views of helplessly dangling legs, combined with John Williams's pounding score, create a relentless atmosphere of primal horror. With an ad image of a giant shark aiming for a tiny female, Universal Studios aggressively marketed Jaws as a thrilling "event," especially in primetime spots on TV, a then seldom-used advertising venue for movies. Bucking the old practice of using wide releases for stinkers, Universal opened the heavily-anticipated film in over 400 theaters in June 1975, and it shattered box office records. Tapping into an abiding dread of the unknown, made scarier by the reality of Great White sharks and corrupt bureaucrats as well as by Spielberg's effective orchestration of excitement, Jaws became the first film ever to return over $100 million to its studio.
