In TIME BANDITS, director Terry Gilliam told a fantastical story filled with heroes and villains seen through the eyes of a small boy. In BRAZIL, Gilliam focused on a fantasy world created by a young man trapped in a totalitarian state. And now, with THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN, Gilliam tells the legend of an old man who has lived a fairy-tale life. In the late 18th century, the Age of Reason has no room for fantasy. In a town besieged by murderous enemies, a traveling company is putting on a stage show about the apocryphal Baron Munchausen, who, with his motley crew of servants, supposedly circled the globe and the universe, following each bizarre adventure with one even more strange and ludicrous. But then a man appears at the theater claiming to be the real Baron, and to prove it, he goes off on one final journey to save the town, chased all along the way by the winged specter of death.

Gilliam never met an epic spectacle he didn't like. MUNCHAUSEN is loaded with brilliant set pieces, including spinning heads on the moon and a giant Botticelli clamshell in the bottom of a hellish volcano. Gilliam has assembled a stellar cast, including John Neville as the Baron, Oliver Reed as Vulcan, Jonathan Pryce (BRAZIL), Jack Purvis (Wally in TIME BANDITS), Robin Williams (credited as Ray D. Tutto), Eric Idle (who contributes "The Torturer's Apprentice" with Michael Kamen to the soundtrack), Charles McKeown (LIFE OF BRIAN), a cameo by Sting, and early appearances by Sarah Polley (as young Sally Salt) and Uma Thurman. Gilliam's special effects bonanza is a modern retelling of THE WIZARD OF OZ, a fabulous adventure filled with daring feats, preposterous nonsense, danger galore, and the overall belief that a world without fantasy is a sad world indeed.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
Director Terry Gilliam adroitly applies his Monty Python sensibilities upon the "career" of famed German prevaricator Baron von Munchausen. Played herein by John Neville, the baron is seen quelling a war that he himself started, flying into the stratosphere on the back of a cannonball, ballooning to the moon, exploring the innards of a volcano, being swallowed by a whale...In short, all of Munchausen's fabulous lies are here presented as "truth," played out in full view of nonplussed witnesses Eric Idle, Charles McKeown, Jack Purvis and Sarah Polley. Fringe benefits include several loving medium shots of jaybird-naked Uma Thurman as Boticelli's Venus and an extended unbilled cameo by Robin Williams --- that is, by the head of Robin Williams --- as the Moon King. Filmed under considerable duress on a budget eventually exceeding $45 million, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen never quite caught on with moviegoers, though it has enjoyed a lucrative afterlife on videocassette. --- Hal Erickson

Terry Gilliam labors to re-create the grubby fantasy world of Time Bandits in his update of The Adventures of Baron Muchausen, and the result is the director's most derivative work --- a strange comment for a film so quirky that it's inaccessible to the masses. Judging Gilliam against himself, however, the criteria change. Once started, it's easy to spot the numerous visual references to Bandits, Gilliam's landmark 1981 film: a paradigm shift through a whirlpool, a prison cage hanging above a bottomless pit, a stage show persevering through a battle, a giant creature emerging from the ocean, and horses breaking through walls. Gilliam is only ripping off himself, but it feels a little desperate. Still, it would be hard to argue with the imagination on hand --- the production design resembles a Monty Python cartoon come to life, which is perfect for the Gulliver's Travels-style tall tales on display. It's equally hard to suppress grins at the doddering charms of John Neville in the title role; his haphazard approach to heroism suits the proceedings perfectly. It's some of the rest of the cast that's wanting, including the kind of babbling cameo from Robin Williams that leaves the viewer wondering when the movie crossed over from eccentric to just plain out-there. Unfortunately, this feeling comes to the fore once too often to satisfy those who don't worship the ground Gilliam walks on. The director certainly has a unique vision, but The Adventures of Baron Munchausen obscures rather than translates it for much of the time. --- Derek Armstrong
