LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
Peter Weller stars in this urban sci-fi Western as Murphy, a good cop who literally gets shot to pieces while on duty and winds up reborn as a crime-fighting machine. An ambitious executive (Miguel Ferrer) at OCP, the corporation running the futuristic city of Detroit, fuses Murphy's torso with bulletproof steel limbs and rewires his brain with computer chips so he will have no will of his own. Murphy's former partner (Nancy Allen) tries to help RoboCop remember his human past, but his circuitry blocks whatever dim memories remain. Luckily, a chance encounter with one of his killers wakes up the human essence in RoboCop, causing him to rebel against his programming and commence on a one-cyborg mission of vengeance that leads all the way to the top of OCP. This second English-language film by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven is unremittingly brutal, darkly comic, and filled with bits of clever satire and pathos. A special highlight is the hilariously incompetent ED-209, RoboCop's main rival in the department of automated law enforcement. Considered by many critics to be one of the best films of its genre, ROBOCOP was followed by several sequels and a 1994 TV series.

Paul Verhoeven's American breakthrough film Robocop is an exceedingly violent blend of black comedy, science fiction, and crime thriller. Set in Detroit sometime in the near-future, the film is about a policeman (Peter Weller) killed in the line of duty, who the department decides to resurrect as a half-human, half-robot supercop. The robocop is indestructible, and within a matter of weeks he has removed crime from the streets of Detroit. However, his human side is tortured by his past, and he wants revenge on the thugs who killed him. Though the violence in Robocop is quite graphic, it is balanced by some very cutting social satire and terrific action, which is often augmented by fantastic stop-motion special effects. The film was later followed by two feature-length sequels and a live-action television series, none of which were as inventive or entertaining as the original film --- Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Dutch director Paul Verhoeven's bloody, glossy B-movie sensibilities first reached a mass audience with this science-fiction vigilante fantasy. In the crime-ridden Detroit of the near future (mostly shot in Dallas), the police have become all but powerless over the aggressive strain of criminal activity that's flourished over the years, and they create a fearless, indestructible android (Peter Weller) for assistance. The casting is sublime: Weller's creepy, Aryan good looks are a perfect match for the role, and he and love interest Nancy Allen seem aware of the script's more preposterous moments. Robocop's attempts at social commentary and satirical jabs at corporate authority are, like much of the rest of the film, juvenile but effective. Above all else, the film established Verhoeven as a slick, dark director with an uncanny knack for making ludicrous material compelling. --- Michael Hastings
