Set in 1966; Produced and released in 1983.

Francis Ford Coppola's stylized teen melodrama is based on the popular novel by S. E. Hinton. In 1960s Tulsa, the "right" and "wrong" sides of the tracks are represented by rival gangs, the upscale Socs and the underprivileged Greasers. Darrel Curtis (Patrick Swayze) is doing his best to raise his two younger brothers, Sodapop (Rob Lowe in his first film role) and Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell). Sensitive Ponyboy is a budding writer in love with Cherry (Diane Lane), the unobtainable beauty from the enemy gang. When Ponyboy's buddy, troubled Johnny Cade (Ralph Macchio), kills one of the Socs in self-defense, their friend Dallas (Matt Dillon) helps the two youths hide out in an abandoned country church. There they live as exiles from a society that doesn't want them. But not all is lost, when Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dallas save some children caught in a fire they become unlikely heroes.

The young cast is the jewel of this sensitive, moving film. Tom Cruise and Emilio Estevez play Greasers, and pop singer Leif Garrett plays rich-kid Bob. Dillon also starred that year in another S. E.Hinton adaptation directed by Coppola--the fascinating and extremely entertaining RUMBLE FISH.

Teen rivalry in a small Southern town sets the stage for this dramatic interpretation of the novel by S.E. Hinton. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, The Outsiders tells the story of the ongoing conflict between the Greasers and the Socs in rural Oklahoma. C. Thomas Howell stars as Ponyboy, the youngest of three orphaned boys who pal around with the local hoods known as the Greasers. When Ponyboy and his friend (Ralph Macchio) get into a deadly confrontation one night, the two go on the run from the cops, and they grow up quickly and soon realize the insignificance of their petty posturing. Matt Dillon stars as the tough-as-nails leader of their group and Patrick Swayze appears as Ponyboy's oldest brother. A host of other 1980s Brat Pack celebs fill out the cast. Dillon later appeared in another Coppola adaption of a Hinton book, Rumble Fish. --- Bernadette McCallion

Hinton's coming-of-age story to such Homeric proportions that it sometimes borders on camp, but it does have moments of lyricism. In a film that unsuccessfully attempts to imitate the angst and widescreen look of Rebel Without a Cause (1954), the script pits a group of wrong-side-of-the-tracks "greasers" against the affluent "socs" in '50s Oklahoma. The teen soap opera, shaped as a cautionary tale by youth writer Hinton, is so overcrowded with characters that all remain sketchy, and the consequent objectification of all the posturing young men in tight pants evokes a two-hour jeans commercial with a mildly homoerotic subtext. Matt Dillon is solid as the leader of the self-styled outsiders, and Carmine Coppola's expansive score supplies an emotional depth the film itself is unable to muster. The cast of future stars includes C. Thomas Howell, Diane Lane, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, and Ralph Macchio. --- Michael Costello
