LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
When psychologist Norman Goodman (Dustin Hoffman) wrote a report for the government on how to deal with extraterrestrial life forces, he didn't expect his recommendations to be used. Now that a secret government agency is investigating what may be an alien spaceship that has been discovered partially buried on the floor of the Pacific Ocean, Norman finds that the plan he outlined is being put into effect and that the team he named in his report has been assembled. In addition to Norman, there is Harry Adams (Samuel L. Jackson), a mathematician; Ted Fielding (Liev Schreiber), a physicist; and Beth Halperin (Sharon Stone), a biochemist and Norman's old flame. Led by the secretive Barnes (Peter Coyote), the foursome undergoes a crash course in diving and living under the sea in a naval habitat and begins investigating the mysterious vessel, discovering a huge glowing sphere made of an unidentifiable substance with a shimmering, almost liquidlike surface. As the investigation continues, a series of strange, horrific events leads the team of scientists to doubt each other's sanity and motives. The film is based on the best-selling novel by Michael Crichton.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
Barry Levinson directed this $100+ million adaptation of Michael Crichton's science fiction novel about the investigation of a half-mile-long spacecraft sitting on the South Pacific ocean floor. Government functionary Barnes (Peter Coyote) assembles a crack scientific team --- psychologist Dr. Norman Goodman (Dustin Hoffman), who wrote a presidential report on alien contact; biochemist Beth Halperin (Sharon Stone), once involved romantically with Goodman; mathematician Harry Adams (Samuel L. Jackson); and astrophysicist Ted Fielding (Liev Schreiber). After descending a thousand feet, they set up housekeeping at their underwater Habitat base, suit up, and enter the craft, finding evidence that it's a U.S. ship from the future. However, the craft's cargo of a shimmering, golden sphere is definitely alien. After Harry contrives to enter the sphere, Norman notes his odd behavior. When the Habitat computer system receives an email message from the sphere ("I am happy"), it's not long before the messages from this entity take a threatening turn ("I will kill you all"), triggering fears to surface along with violent attacks to the Habitat. The film is divided into chapters, such as "The Ride Down," "The First Exchange," and "The Monster." Shot on soundstages at the abandoned Mare Island Naval Shipyard (Vallejo, California), the effects combine animation, miniatures, prosthetics, animatronics, and digital images. After an involving and genuinely chilling setup, this adaptation of a Michael Crichton novel gradually loses steam, becoming flat and unconvincing. Surprisingly, some of this is due to a passionless performance from lead Dustin Hoffman, who is never really believable as a genius psychologist; he seems more like a retired Sears sales manager than one of the foremost academic minds of his generation. Part of this is also the problem of the screenplay, which takes far too long to get its characters in the know regarding the truth about a mysterious spacecraft and its effect on them; a group of people allegedly this intelligent would have puzzled it out more quickly. A giant squid attack (no kidding) isn't handled particularly well, but then again, maybe there is no good way to visually create a giant squid attack that isn't hilarious. Minor supporting characters such as the one played by Queen Latifah may as well wear the red security shirts of the original Star Trek TV series, so obviously expendable are they, while the film's protagonists spend most of their time dodging undersea critters instead of exploring a mysterious alien spacecraft. Sphere (1998) pales in comparison to a film to which it bears marked similarities, James Cameron's The Abyss (1989), a film that received mix reactions upon its release but looks more and more in subsequent years like a genre classic. --- Karl Williams
