LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
Murtaugh is still the family man. Riggs is still the daredevil, but now he counts the odds before bucking them. This time, they must protect an accountant who has laundered a half billion dollars in narcotics money. He leads them to a murderous syndicate with ties to a foreign power. Along the way, there's a six-story plummet from a window, a booby-trapped toilet, an underwater escape, and more. Academy Award Nominations: Best Sound Effects Editing.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
In many ways superior to its predecessor Lethal Weapon, Lethal Weapon 2 reteams Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as, respectively, "loose cannon" LA detective Martin Riggs and Riggs' cautious family-man partner Roger Murtaugh. The villain this time is a South African diplomat (Joss Ackland) who doubles as a drug dealer. Though Riggs knows what's going on thanks to characterless character witness Joe Pesci, he can't touch the villain because of "diplomatic immunity." After perils too numerous to mention, Riggs and Murtaugh shoot it out with the heavies on the deck of a South African cargo ship. The film sometimes strains credulity to the breaking point, notably by having lead villain Joss Ackland turn out to be the same man who killed Mel Gibson's wife in the first Lethal Weapon (this plot point seems to have been inserted with a squeegie). Still, Lethal Weapon 2 contains one of the best---and funniest---suspense scenes ever filmed: Mel Gibson agonizingly attempting to extricate a terrified Danny Glover from a booby-trapped toilet seat. Gibson, Glover and Joe Pesci would be reunited three years later for the equally entertaining Lethal Weapon 3. --- Hal Erickson

As much as Lethal Weapon may have stepped outside its genre trappings to strike an unexpected chord, its sequel was the film that gave the series the legs it needed to continue onward and upward. While it still plumbs some dark, painful subject matter for its lead characters, Lethal Weapon 2 skews lighter by treating the Murtaugh-Riggs dynamic as the stuff of fruitful comedy, an approach intensified by the winning Leo Getz character, whom Joe Pesci makes all his own. The verbal ticks of Pesci's loudmouth pipsqueak took on a pop culture life of their own, with filmgoers eager to mimic his rapid-fire locutions. But it's the supreme comfort of Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, with both each other and the script, that rockets this to the top of buddy movies to such an extent that it became ripe for parody. Richard Donner again proves his command of this material with a handful of memorable set pieces, and especially his use of Gibson in Gibson's trademark bug-out scenes, which coined the franchise title. The familiarity of the recurring jokes and character traits would start to feel a little weary by Lethal Weapon 3, but here, they're the stuff sequel dreams are made of. --- Derek Armstrong
