LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
A crackpot Big Apple cabbie finds himself in a heap of trouble after his self-published conspiracy 'zine elicits the interest of some shady government heavies--and leads to the unexplained murders of all five subscribers. As the J. Edgars close in, he takes to the lam with the one person who may be able to help him--a Justice Department attorney with a mysterious murder of her own to solve.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
Jerry Fletcher (Mel Gibson) is a New York City cab driver who seems to have absorbed every bit of crackpot information passed along as "suppressed news" that's surfaced on talk radio or the Internet in the past 20 years. Anti-United Nations militia men who are actually U.N. operatives NASA scientists engineering earthquakes Oliver Stone's secret life as a government agent discrediting conspiracy theorists Jerry's heard 'em all and believes most of them, and even publishes his own journal of forbidden information, with a subscription list that now totals five people. In short, Jerry seems like just another New York City lunatic, and while he spends a fair amount of his spare time following Alice Sutton (Julia Roberts), a government attorney, Alice regards him as harmless; he once intervened while she was being mugged, and he's been acting like her benign if whacked-out protector ever since. However, one day Jerry is kidnapped and worked over by CIA operatives; he is convinced that one of the theories he uncovered must be for real but he has no idea which one. He tries to get Alice to help him, and before long both are drawn into a dangerous web that leads to a startling revelation of just how Jerry got this way. Mel Gibson gives a fine comic performance, and those with a taste for alternative media will have fun dissecting which of the theories Jerry spouts are "real" (or at least appeared before this film was made) and which were the invention of the screenwriters. --- Mark Deming

There is a riveting motion picture buried somewhere deep inside the addled heart of this thriller from the terrible twosome of star Mel Gibson and director Richard Donner. Whenever the pair matches up on a project, a sense of dread quickly befalls those who loathe the profoundly annoying, artificially improvisational, falsely zany style of their cinematic collaborations. Enough of the elements are here an interesting story, compelling characters, a terrific villain well played by Patrick Stewart, a solid female lead in Julia Roberts that one can deduce the original script from screenwriter Brian Helgeland probably crackled with suspense. Although toned down compared to some of their other films, the Donner/Gibson touch is present here, and their inability to treat the material seriously dilutes the experience. Gibson plays his brain-damaged cab driver with such exhausting, mock-manic energy that what he seems to need is not therapy but a Ritalin and Prozac cocktail. He's more irksome than sympathetic. The film calls out not for the winking irony of Donner, which always seems to say, "Yeah, we are aware it's all a big goof; we're just putting on a show," but for the unflinching sobriety Bryan Singer brought to X-Men (2000). That project, literally based on a comic book, handled its source material with the thoughtfulness of Shakespeare; Conspiracy Theory would have benefited mightily from a similar attitude. --- Karl Williams
