LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
In a small town an average Joe named George Malley, becomes a different man when he is struck by a bright streak of light on his 37th birthday. George is suddenly a genius, suddenly able to play chess, speak a new language, and read numerous books in a day, amongst other abilities. George is also endowed with telekinetic powers, able to move objects with his mind.
  Although George's sweet personality remains the same throughout all this, his newfound abilities breed jealousy and insecurity amongst some of his ne'er-do-well buddies. Furthermore, it appears that George's immense intelligence could actually be harming him physically -- and might even shorten his life.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
Director Jon Turteltaub followed up the hit While You Were Sleeping (1995) with this fantasy similar to Charly (1968) and a film from the previous year, Powder (1994). John Travolta stars as George Malley, a humble mechanic in a rural California town. On his 37th birthday, George celebrates at a pub with friends Nate (Forest Whitaker) and Doc (Robert Duvall), the local physician. When he steps outside, George observes a bright light in the sky that knocks him briefly unconscious. When he awakens, George has incredible intellectual powers. He checks books out of the library in armfuls, becomes an inventor, a psychic, has telekinetic powers, predicts an earthquake, and memorizes Portuguese in minutes. Using his newfound powers, George becomes a hero, but he can't totally win over the spooked townsfolk or the standoffish Lace (Kyra Sedgwick), a single mom burned by love once too often. As George's kindness breaks down Lace's reserve and a romance begins, his fame spreads, bringing him to the attention of the FBI and curious university scientists. Similarities between George's powers and the alleged benefits of Travolta's religion, Scientology, led to charges that the film was veiled pro-Scientology propaganda. --- Karl Williams

Phenomenon oozes more syrup than a Vermont maple tree stabbed a hundred times. Everything about this falsely inspirational movie proceeds along a prefabricated path toward an inevitable, saccharine conclusion. Jon Turteltaub's film is a master manipulator, having made over $100 million at the domestic box office on the strength of John Travolta's name recognition and a screenplay that's potent to a certain segment of the viewing public. The ingredients for popular success are all in evidence: an aw-shucks small town, a likeable protagonist, and a wondrous supernatural occurrence with a tinge of heartland religious flavor to it. Admittedly, it's interesting to contemplate the possibilities of being struck by instant brilliance, and to see how an ordinary man might cope with it. But it's such a predictable point A to point B to point C script that any tears jerked by the end should have been anticipated during the opening credits. Coupled with Michael, it looked like Travolta was going to make gooey star vehicles a career focus, but he wisely abandoned the trend in favor of thrillers and unsentimental dramas. --- Derek Armstrong
