LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is John Carpenter's foray into the world of H.P. Lovecraft and surreal horror. An insurance investigator (Sam Neill) is sent to find a missing author, Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow). As he comes closer to finding the author, things start to change around him, and soon nothing is what it seems. Madness seems to be the normal state of things, while reason and sanity have no place in this new world created by the mind of Sutter Cane. Carpenter plays with changing perspective, making the audience aware thay they too are part of the story, and maybe, just maybe, this is not just make believe. The story is very ambitious in its attempt to put a whammy on the viewer's imagination, but the direction is steady and thoughtful enough to pull it off. Sam Neill is superb in the lead role of the only sane man left on Earth, incredulous to the destruction of reality as he knows it. It is his controlled performance that makes the bizarre events in the film threatening and scary. Jurgen Prochnow is deeply creepy as author and madman Sutter Cane, who's imagination is so vivid it is spilling out of his head into the real world. John Carpenter is known for his scary movies, and he does not fail to deliver with IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS.

Hired to help locate a missing author, an insurance investigator discovers to his terror that the nightmarish events depicted in the writer's best-selling horror novels are coming true. Wishing to be both a horror film and a parody of the genre, John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness combines supernatural thrills with winking references. For instance, the vanished author, Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow), is modeled on writers like Stephen King and Howard Phillips Lovecraft, from his great popularity to his obsession with small-town New England. Indeed, it is to one such hamlet that investigator John Trent (Sam Neill) and Cane's female editor (Julie Carmen) travel, discovering a town filled with terrifying scenes right out of Cane's books, from random axe murders to far worse. Have Cane's fans gone psychotic and begun imitating his writings, or are Cane's stories of an otherworldly evil invading the earth actually true In the Mouth of Madness's mix of self-referential satire and real frights anticipates the later Scream (1996). --- Judd Blaise

Typically for a John Carpenter film, this chiller starts out strong but then sags in the second act until it's limping badly into the narrative home stretch. There probably isn't a director working in this genre who is so gracefully able to repeatedly build up a strong head of steam, story wise, only to see it dissipate in a disappointing second half. Sam Neill looks as perplexed as the audience, while Jurgen Prochnow is his assuredly creepy self (the actor seems born to portray Nazis and vampires). The story is a familiar one, the same ground having been trod before by Stephen King and many others in both literature and film, so the script, cribbed liberally by studio exec Michael De Luca from H.P. Lovecraft (sans credit, no less) gets zero points for originality. The offbeat premise of making an insurance investigator the protagonist instead of the imaginative novelist who's causing the onscreen mayhem is a nifty idea, however, and could have yielded a seriously interesting piece. Instead, as Neill's character begins to experience the same events over and over again, viewers may find themselves catching a quick nap, the repetitive narrative device having been done ad nauseam in numerous television series episodes. Although he's got his devotees, Carpenter could and should be our finest living horror director, but isn't. As proven by In the Mouth of Madness (1995), and most of his other work in the same decade, the man needs to take a night class in screenwriting; too many of his films are built on terrific ideas but leave fans squirming with impatience by the drawn-out finale. --- Karl Williams
