LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
Director Bruce Beresford's thriller stars Ashley Judd as Libby Parsons, a young woman with a seemingly happy marriage and a prosperous life. While on a weekend sailing trip, she wakes up in the middle of the night to find the boat covered in blood and her husband, Nick (Bruce Greenwood), missing. Since she's found holding a knife covered in her husband's blood, Libby's quickly indicted and convicted of murder. Her lawyer suggests that she give up her son, and he's soon adopted by her friend, Angie (Annabeth Gish), who promptly disappears with the child. Although Libby's angry enough to break out of prison, her lawyer-cellmate advises her to wait for parole and take advantage of double jeopardy protection, a legal loophole that prevents her from being tried for the same crime twice. Six years later, Libby's paroled into a halfway house under the care of hard-bitten probation officer Travis Lehman (Tommy Lee Jones). She escapes immediately, taking off to find her son and exact revenge on those who framed her. Lehman, expecting as much, is fast on her trail.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
In this thriller, Ashley Judd plays Elizabeth Parsons, who is convicted of murdering her husband and sentenced to a long stretch in prison. After Elizabeth has spent six years behind bars, it turns out that her husband is still alive: he faked his own death as part of an insurance scam, and Elizabeth is soon released. However, Elizabeth's feelings for her husband can hardly be described as warm, and she wants custody of her son. Elizabeth's parole officer (Tommy Lee Jones) wonders if she might try to make his murder a real thing after all, especially since the law states a person cannot be convicted of the same crime twice. Double Jeopardy was directed by Bruce Beresford, from a screenplay by Douglas S. Cook and David Weisberg. Mark Deming

After a potentially promising setup, this Ashley Judd vehicle shifts promptly into Fugitive mode, replete with foot chases, car crashes, and ferry-boat escapes sometimes all in the same scene. Double Jeopardy flirts with a number of enticing genres in its first 20 minutes: slasher film, courtroom potboiler, women's prison flick. The fun ends, however, as soon as Judd settles into a court-mandated boarding house presided over by stern parole officer/father figure Travis (Tommy Lee Jones on autopilot). The subsequent action scenes have little to recommend them, though anyone not familiar with the aforementioned Fugitive or its offspring (Chain Reaction, The Firm, et al.) may find a couple of the set pieces worthy of biting a nail or two. The script's titular conceit since our heroine can't be tried on the same crime twice, then she might as well kill the person she was convicted of murdering will be particularly laughable to viewers with a shred of legal aptitude.
