LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
Ike Graham (Richard Gere) is a New York newspaper columnist with a problem - his deadline is an hour away, his ex-wife is his boss and his writer's block is working overtime.  Retreating to his favorite watering hole to "brainstorm," Ike hears about a young woman in rural Maryland named Maggie (Julia Roberts) who, apparently, loves being engaged, but who has very cold feet about getting married. Intrigued, Ike composes a column about Maggie, beginning a chain of events which leads him to Hale, Maryland, her hometown.  Maggie Carpenter also has a problem - Ike Graham. Furious with the column and its author, she plans to even the score with him. Ike eventually discovers there is much more to Maggie than just a problem with commitment; and he ends up with the story of a lifetime.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
In 1990, Pretty Woman turned Julia Roberts into a star and gave Richard Gere's career a much-needed boost; for 1999, Roberts and Gere reunited with director Garry Marshall for the romantic comedy Runaway Bride. Roberts plays Maggie, who has left so many prospective husbands at the altar that she has gained notoriety as "the Runaway Bride," and a reporter (played by Richard Gere) is assigned to write a story about her. He tracks her down to a small town in Maryland where she's spending time with her family and preparing to give marriage another try. However, the more time she spends with the persistent reporter, the more second thoughts she has about her fianc (Christopher Meloni). Hector Elizondo, another Pretty Woman alumnus, appears in the supporting cast alongside Joan Cusack, Paul Dooley, and Rita Wilson. --- Mark Deming

The reteaming of Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, almost ten years after Pretty Woman launched her into the cinematic stratosphere, was a fairly obvious ploy. And the resulting film, Runaway Bride, just as obviously gets its shoelaces tangled trying to duplicate the chemistry and charm of a one-time phenomenon. Roberts and Gere posed for the movie's poster on separate days, leaving them looking like cardboard cutouts propped against each other --- a good analogy for their onscreen performances. A blas Gere steps into the familiar role of an affable lout who knows the first names of every blue-collar worker in his New York City neighborhood, establishing him as a populist hero who deserves the audience's affection. As if that environment weren't artificial enough, he then enters an idyllic Hollywood back lot of a "small town" where he virtually stalks Roberts, befriending nearly everybody and turning up at her every social gathering. All the while his job is in jeopardy, and though one might think he'd be hounded by pressure to produce, he exists on suspended movie time, coolly smelling as many roses as he wants. Roberts is fine in her role, but both actors could do this in their sleep. It's the kind of film viewers might find themselves liking, only to later realize that the set-ups are so prefabricated they leave them feeling sullied. This film performed at the box office in a big way --- sticking in the top five for weeks and netting $150 million domestically --- but that doesn't make it anything more than an empty crowd-pleaser. --- Derek Armstrong
