LaserDisc Movie Review:
Practical Magic stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as Sally and Gillian Owens, sisters in a family of witches. Unfortunately for the two girls, an old curse prevents them from really loving any man --- if they do, he will die. Their spinster aunts, Frances (Stockard Channing) and Jet (Dianne Wiest) explain the curse to the sisters when they are left in the aunts? care. The aunts also teach them to perform magic. All seems to be fun and games inside their mansion-like house on the cliff --- in the rest of the town they are the topic of gossip. Each sister interprets the curse her own way. Gillian chooses to fool around with almost every man she meets, never getting close enough to fall in love; Sally vows never to fall in love and steers clear of all relationships.

Practical Magic got more than its share of bad press when it was first released theatrically, most of which was not deserved. True, it does flip-flop from genre to genre --- at times black comedy, at times chick-flick, at times melodrama --- but the director and editor deserve credit for keeping the transitions smooth. Credit is also due to the stars: they work well together and put in solid performances, though they do seem to be typecast in their roles. Filmed partly in Washington State's San Juan Islands, the small harbor setting gives Practical Magic its storybook feel. The make-believe is enhanced with quirky and innovative special effects.

Practical Magic is sweet, sassy, sexy and smart. At its heart, it is a love story--- Sally and Gary (Aidan Quinn) are meant to be together but forced to be apart --- and everything else is window dressing. It follows a clever script that is full of little moments that truly sparkle. Above all, it entertains. (Review by Cheryl DeWolfe)
