LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
This film provides a slice-of-life glimpse into black history as it follows a young boy named Cliff growing up in the segregated South.
  The story begins in 1946, when Cliff is born. He is initially raised by his great-grandparents, who expose him to such things as a KKK rally to teach him about the racism blacks have to endure. When he's older, Cliff is reared by his great-aunt, and meets liberal whites such as Mrs. Maybry, who, since blacks are prohibited from entering the library, checks books out for them. But despite the omnipresent bigotry Cliff encounters, his life is also filled with rich childhood experiences, such as fishing trips and family picnics. And perhaps best of all, the young man is fortunate enough to be raised in a tight-knit family that finds its strength in unity.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
This wonderfully wrought drama offers a view of Southern African American culture not often depicted in films. With no drugs and little violence, it presents a rich portrait of a family living in a close community and makes the point that sometimes the most unsung of heroes can have as much influence on people as their better known counterparts. The tale is adapted from the autobiography of Clifton L. Taulbert. Divided in three parts, it begins in Glen Allan, Mississippi in 1946. There a baby is born in a cotton field. A decade later, Taulbert, who was raised by his great grandparents, as his mother had no husband, leads a normal, basically happy life. His great grandmother is Ma Pearl and his great grandfather, the impressive Poppa, is a proud, pragmatic fellow who teaches Taulbert the realities of being a Southern Negro as soon as Taulbert learns to speak. Still, Taulbert doesn't have much truck with the whites and those he does meet are generally non-stereotypical. The second part begins in 1958 as Taulbert assists a thoroughly modern-thinking woman, Mrs. Maybry. It is she who teaches him to love good books by checking out books from the segregated library. Taulbert also spends much time with his great aunt and his cousin. In the final segment, Taulbert gets his first taste of the budding Civil Rights Movement when the local ice man is nearly run out of business by prejudice and discrimination. The story ends in 1962 as Taulbert seeks his fortune up North.
