When 19-year-old Lucy Harmon (Liv Tyler) arrives in Tuscany, wondering about her mother (a recent suicide) and still nursing a crush on Niccolo, the local playboy she met on a visit four years earlier, everyone sits up and takes notice--especially director Bernardo Bertolucci, who trains his camera on the ingenue with understandable enthusiasm. The Graysons, who own the artists' colony and villa where Lucy's mother once wrote poetry, take the young girl in, and their guests enjoy the infusion of youth. Perhaps most deeply affected is Alex Parrish (Jeremy Irons), a terminally ill writer who finds Lucy charming and vital. Before such attentions, Lucy's interest in Niccolo (who turns out to be a jerk) quickly fades, replaced by an unexpected mystery regarding the identity of her father and a possible new love. And in a further attempt to understand her mother, Lucy writes light little poems as well. (Bertolucci has her words appear on the screen as she scribbles.) In fact, everything seems light in lush and lovely in Tuscany, which provides a gorgeous setting for the gifted ensemble to play out their intrigues.

This beautiful if ponderous souffle of a film from director Bernardo Bertolucci serves more as an Italian travelogue than a drama. Liv Tyler stars as Lucy Harmon, an American teenager arriving in the lush Tuscan countryside to visit family friends residing there. Lucy visited four years earlier and exchanged a kiss with a handsome boy with whom she hopes to become reacquainted. Lucy's mother has committed suicide since then, and the teenager also hopes to discover the identity of her father, whom her mother hinted was a resident of the villa. Once she arrives, Lucy meets a variety of eccentric visitors, including a dying gay playwright (Jeremy Irons), a sculptor (Donal McCann), an entertainment lawyer (D.W. Moffet), and several others. Lucy has decided to lose her virginity and becomes an object of intense interest to the men of the household, but the suitor she finally selects is not the initial object of her affection. Stealing Beauty boasted an intriguing parallel between actress Tyler's role and her real life. The daughter of a famed rock and roll star, she was brought up believing that her father was someone else, a fact that Bertolucci may have had in mind when writing the story. --- Karl Williams

This drama from Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci has the pastoral look and tone to place it in the company of such sleepy rural passion plays as Enchanted April (1992) and A Month by the Lake (1995). What Bertolucci and his co-screenwriter Susan Minot have failed to provide, however, is a strong protagonist to make the visually pleasant journey worthwhile. The elements are there: an interesting cast of supporting characters, the lush backdrop of the Italian countryside, a minor mystery, and an undercurrent of sexuality. What's missing is a lead that can bring all of these disparate ingredients together into an edible concoction. As conceived by the script, the character of Lucy Harmon is a nonentity, existing only as an empty vessel into which the hopes, dreams, and lusts of others are poured. The pouting, nubile Liv Tyler is the perfect choice for the part at the perfect age to play it. It's too bad then that she's embodying a role that seems nearly mythic in its disassociation from anything even remotely human; she could just as well be an elf, ghost, or alien as a flesh and blood teenage girl, possessing literally no thoughts, inspirations, or emotions of her own. Bertolucci's bedazzled vision of a horny girl-woman suffers from a philosophical flaw, the inability to recognize individuality and personality in youth. Lucy just isn't a believable person, so Stealing Beauty (1996) crumbles down around her thinly conceived shoulders. --- Karl Williams
