LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
Aspiring on-air reporter Tally Atwater (Michelle Pfieffer) may be lovely and ambitious, but she lacks talent. That changes, however, after Warren Justice (Robert Redford), a former White House correspondent turned Miami news director, discovers her. As he carefully guides her career to new heights, Warren and Tally become increasingly attracted to each other, and begin a romance. Soon, a star is born in Tally, who rises through the ranks of network news - while Warren's once-stellar career sinks into the depths of mediocrity. Furthermore, Tally's ascension takes her away from her lover/mentor, when she is forced to relocate to Philadelphia. Tally struggles to stay afloat at her new assignment while dodging jabs from Marcia McGrath (Stockard Channing), a veteran warhorse reporter who jealously protects her position as number one. Finally Warren turns up to inspire Tally and the two partners begin a new career together. However, on a routine assignment in a Philadelphia prison Tally and her cameraman are taken hostage in a prison riot and forced to endure hours of intense violence.Tally bravely covers the groundbreaking story from within the walls of the collapsing prison as Warren looks on from outside, guiding her through her first national broadcast. This incredible act of bravery leads to Tally's eagerily anticipated advancement to a national network newscaster position and the continuation of the dynamic duo's rise to fame.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
A story about a career television journalist who eclipses her mentor, this drama's plot resembles that of A Star Is Born, and it shares the same screenwriters as those who penned the 1976 version of that film, John Gregory Dunne and Joan Didion. It's based loosely on the real-life story of newscaster Jessica Savitch. Sally Atwater (Michelle Pfieffer) gets a job at a Miami TV station based on a demo tape from her hometown of Reno, Nevada. The station's news director is Warren Justice (Robert Redford), a former high-profile Washington newsman whose career has suffered from his insistence on integrity. He makes Sally his gofer and criticizes her clothes and appearance while she begs him for a chance to go on-air. She becomes the station's weathercaster and Warren gives her the stage name of Tally. With Warren's constant advice, she breaks into news reporting and her star rises quickly as the two become romantically involved. She takes a better job in Philadelphia, with Warren's blessing, and there she soon eclipses the anchorwoman Marcia McGrath (Stockard Channing). From there, Tally's career continues to flourish, while her relationship with Warren takes some strange twists and turns. --- Michael Betzold

This muddled romantic melodrama began as a biography of ill-fated newscaster Jessica Savitch but has clearly passed one too many times through the notorious Hollywood "development" mill. There's some genuine chemistry between leads Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert Redford, and the former is more believable as a news broadcaster than most actors that attempt to portray anchors, but that's about all to recommend about this obvious, dumb project. So lacking in subtlety is the film that its square-jawed hero is named Warren Justice (unless, of course, the filmmakers were trying to say something about Justice Earl Warren ) and much of the corny dialogue expresses precisely what the characters are thinking ("She eats the lens"), bypassing the more intellectual choice of subtext. Maybe it's supposed to be clever that the story's tragic finale is a reversal of what happened in the real life of the person who inspired it, but it only serves as a reminder that a far more riveting tale has been bypassed to serve up this tripe, that, despite the picture's earnestness, is remarkably cynical in its artistic choices. It tells the viewer everything that needs to be said about Up Close & Personal (1996) that the true story of its subject has been deemed too dark, tragic, and controversial for an honest portrayal, and that its makers think audiences too stupid to accept the reality they should have presented. --- Karl Williams
