An urgent note in a bottle from a kidnapped orphan girl leads two adventuresome mice on a "wild albatross chase" to Devil's Bayou and a madcap encounter with the villainous Madame Medusa. Bob Newhart, Eva Gabor and Geraldine Page lend their voices. Academy Award nominations: Best Song ("Someone's Waiting for You").

LaserDisc Movie Review:
Two fantasy novels by Margery Sharp were combined for in the Disney animated feature The Rescuers. The title characters are a pair of mice, Bernard and Miss Bianca. A little girl named Penny has been kidnapped by the Miss Medusa. When the human law enforcement officials fail to locate the child, Bernard and Miss Bianca take over with the help of several colorful animal companions. In fine old Disney tradition, the comedy element is offset by moments of genuine terror. The animation and the songs were the best Disney had turned out in years. Adding to the fun was the captivating voicework by Bob Newhart (Bernard), Eva Gabor (Miss Bianca), Geraldine Page (Madame Medusa), Jim "Fibber McGee" Jordan, John McIntire, Joe Flynn, George "Goober" Lindsay, and a host of others. Its box office performance fully justifying the four years and $8 million invested in its production, The Rescuers remains one of the most popular of the Disney cartoon films produced after the death of Uncle Walt. A heavily computerized sequel, The Rescuers Down Under was released in 1990. --- Hal Erickson

A big success in its initial release, The Rescuers is one of the lesser animated efforts from the estimable Disney studio, but is still solid family entertainment. The Rescuers continued the trend begun by The Jungle Book of using "name" players to provide personality voices, and does so to good effect. Bob Newhart makes Bernard's mild, unassuming manner and understandable timidity both likeable and endearing, and Eva Gabor's Bianca is something like the cartoon equivalent of a Hitchcock heroine (although with more warmth and less ice). Geraldine Page has the scene-stealing villainess role of Madame Medusa, and she makes the most of it, tearing up the screen with maniacal glee and being genuinely disturbing at times. Indeed, both Medusa and the situation in which the young heroine finds herself may be a little upsetting to some children. Visually, the picture is notable for its very dark, atmospheric swamp and for a good use of muted colors. The sketchbook paintings that accompany the credits are a nice, unusual touch, and the animation of the over-the-top Medusa, as well as her crocodile "hench-pets," deserves kudos. The film features a slim and rather perfunctory song score, although "Someone's Waiting for You" has become a popular standard. The Rescuers marked the last feature film for five of Disney's legendary "Nine Old Men." --- Craig Butler
