LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
This uniquely 1970s blend of swords, sorcery, science fiction, kung-fu, fascism, and nuclear holocaust was director Ralph Bakshi's first venture into fantasy after his grim urban epics STREETFIGHT and HEAVY TRAFFIC. In a postapocalyptic future that appears as a blend of World War II Europe and J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, a pint-size wizard named Avatar (Bob Holt, sounding like Peter Falk) must save the world from a band of fascist mutants controlled by his evil twin brother, Blackwolf (Steve Gravers), who likes to confuse enemy armies by projecting films of Adolf Hitler speeches during attacks. Painted live-action footage of advancing Nazi armies contrasts with Saturday-morning-cartoon-style animation of fairies and elves as Avatar travels through various magical and radioactive realms on his quest. Aiding him are a sexually promiscuous fairy queen (Jesse Wells), a hot-blooded warrior elf (Mark Hamill, fresh from his role in STAR WARS) and Peace (David Proval), a misunderstood robot rebelling against his Blackwolf-controlled programming. A bizarre and psychedelic meditation on magic vs. technology, this cult film still finds an audience on college campuses and will prove quite rewarding to viewers in the right frame of mind.

In this animated futuristic tale, a pair of twins must fight for domination of what is left of the world, the good man using the powers of magic in an attempt to save the Earth, and the evil twin taking advantage of the horrors of technology that again threaten to destroy everything. --- Iotis Erlewine

For a while in the 1970s, it looked as if animated movies might be entering a new era, one marked by a break with traditional (children's) subject matter, animation styles, and storytelling methods. Films such as Fritz the Cat, Allegro Non Troppo, and Heavy Traffic all challenged the Disney method, quite successfully. Wizards was part of this era, but it's a very mixed bag. The animation is in a different vein --- what might be termed a "multi-media" approach, employing the traditional cel-based process as well as extensive rotoscoping (though often in silhouette) and use of still sketches. It's an intriguing idea, but too sloppily executed to be successful. The story itself is convoluted and not particularly convincing; at times it seems as if director Ralph Bakshi didn't really have a story to tell, just an urge to put some images onscreen and move them through some exercises. However, there are some very nice isolated sequences, and the movie has a palpable sense of the period in which it was made. It somehow or other screams out "1977" in every frame, even though the design scheme is based upon both the distant past and the farflung future. Sometimes irritating, Wizards is of interest mostly to aficionados of animated film, who will find as many things to make them smile as to make them cringe. --- Craig Butler
