LaserDisc Movie Review:
Bruce Willis returns as misfit cop John McClane in the third film in the Die Hard series. McClane has fallen on hard times; after moving to New York City and breaking up with his wife, he's developed a drinking problem and has been suspended from the N.Y.P.D. However, his past comes back to haunt him in the form of Simon (Jeremy Irons), a terrorist bomber who has been using McClane as his contact as he plants a series of bombs in public places and gives McClane inane "clues" to their whereabouts in the form of riddles and bizarre games. McClane soon discovers he's been involved in Simon's scheme as part of a personal grudge; while associated with an international terrorist group, Simon is also the brother of the man McClane threw off the side of a skyscraper several years back (in the original Die Hard). Now McClane, with the help of a Harlem shopkeeper named Zeus (Samuel L. Jackson) has to find out where Simon has planted the bombs, guess where he'll strike next, and try to find his base of operations before more bombs go off and thousands of people die. The supporting cast features Graham Greene and Colleen Camp; singer Sam Phillips made her acting debut as a member of Simon's terrorist group (Phillips never speaks, so as to not to reveal her Texas accent). --- Mark Deming

A de rigueur sequel that's not much more than an exhausting series of explosions, chases, and shootouts, this third (and hopefully last) in the series of action films suffers from common sequel maladies. Just as in the batch of follow-ups to Rocky (1976), First Blood (1982), and Lethal Weapon (1987), the sequels to Die Hard (1988) move too far away from the powerful source material that inspired them. By refusing to allow central characters to grow or develop (in the interest of further installments), and by becoming more cartoon-like in ramping up the physical threats and conflicts to absurd levels, sequels tend to become literal parodies of themselves the further removed they are from the original film. Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) is no exception. Even worse, the narrative gymnastics required to set up yet another outsider-cop-comes-to-the-city's-rescue scenario are contrived and unbelievable. The one good idea in the film is giving star Bruce Willis a cohort with whom to share the pain; many of the bickering scenes between him and co-star Samuel L. Jackson are entertaining. It's not enough to keep this franchise afloat, however, when the film's big idea of an antagonist is another sleek Euro-villain (Jeremy Irons), literally the brother of the first film's stylish bad guy. Why not just make him a twin and bring back Alan Rickman in the role that made the actor famous At least then the audience would have a sense that Die Hard with a Vengeance knows it's high-camp, summer "popcorn picture" entertainment, and they could sit back and enjoy. --- Karl Williams
