LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
In 1974, Sam Peckinpah directed BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA, a film that is, even for Peckinpah, relentlessly bleak in its portrayal of life. Tellingly, it was one of the last films Peckinpah produced; it was also the fearsome director's personal favorite of the many movies he directed. Warren Oates stars as Bennie, a piano-player who happens upon two bounty hunters who have been dispatched by a Mexican rancher to collect the head of Alfredo Garcia. It seems that Garcia had impregnated the ranchers daughter, who wants his head as indisputable proof that this deviant is dead, and won't be bothering his family again. Penniless and out of luck, Bennie does a little snooping of his own, discovers that his girlfriend knows where the final resting place of Garcia is, and decides to usurp the bounty hunters by severing Garcia's head and collecting the cash for himself. Peckinpah unleashes some ferocious scenes of violence as Bennie attempts to complete his task, while Oates is magnificent as Bennie, who slides into madness as events take a turn for the worse; he even resorts to talking to Garcia's decapitated head, and washing it in the shower. 

A truly awesome addition to Peckinpah's canon of films, BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA is often unfairly overlooked in favor of more popular Peckinpah fare such as THE WILD BUNCH and STRAW DOGS. While the film may be shot through with Peckinpah's trademark misogyny and violence, it nevertheless remains a potent ride through humanity's dark side, with Peckinpah training his unrelenting camera on some gruesome scenes that remain long in the memory after the final credits fade.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
Wealthy Mexican Emilio Fernandez puts a bounty on the head of Alfredo Garcia, who has seduced Fernandez' daughter. Trouble is, Alfredo Garcia is already dead and buried. Barkeep Warren Oates and prostitute Isela Vega (whose services had frequently been used by Garcia) travel to the small town in whose cemetery Garcia is interred, planning to dig up the body and recover the head. Attacked by a shadowy Mexican clan, Vega is murdered and Garcia's body is stolen. Now hoping to avenge Vega, Oates joins Fernandez' homosexual henchmen Gig Young and Robert Webber in pursuit of the Mexican murderers . --- Hal Erickson

Sam Peckinpah produced many outrageous and challenging films during his career, but Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia stands apart from the pack as the most unusual and demanding entry in his filmography. As a result, casual action fans expecting something like The Getaway will be confounded, but anyone seriously interested in this director's work will be rewarded with a very daring and personal film. The script, which some consider to be an allegory for Peckinpah's experiences in Hollywood, blends gritty sadism and pitch-black dark comedy in equal doses as it depicts Bennie's increasingly surreal journey to fulfill the mission mentioned in the title. The story line rambles a bit at first, but retains interest thanks to intense work from a gifted cast. Gig Young and Robert Webber are amusing and terrifying all at once as a pair of icy (and possibly gay) hit men and Isela Vega gives the film a much-needed shot of human warmth as Elita. However, top honors must be given to Warren Oates for his extraordinary work as Bennie. Oates is all raw nerves and painful sincerity as he charts his characters transition from down-and-out thug to avenging angel with a furious, no-holds-barred intensity. Behind the camera, Peckinpah captures the desperation of his story with unflinching power and works in the occasional bit of gallows humor. The action is suprisingly sparse, but Peckinpah delivers a few memorable set pieces, including a hotel room shootout and a tense scene where Bennie visits Garcia's grave with unexpected results. In the end, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia is too eccentric and demanding for the casual viewer, but remains worth the time for cult movie enthusiasts and is a necessity for students of Peckinpah's filmmaking. --- Donald Guarisco
