LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, based on Nordhoff and Hall's factual narrative of the infamous mutiny in 1789, stars Marlon Brando as First Mate Fletcher Christian. Sailing from Portsmouth in 1787, under the tyrannical rule of Captain William Bligh (Trevor Howard), the H.M.S. Bounty begins an ill-timed voyage around Cape Horn in search of the South Pacific plant, the breadfruit. As the months wear on, Bligh's backbreaking discipline, including flogging and keelhauling as punishment for minor offenses, starts to create a powerful sense of ill-will among the crew. Eventually even Christian's aristocratic foppery begins to fade as he sympathizes with the crew's suffering. Despite the brutal winter storms that threaten to tear the ship apart, the Bounty and its battered crew manage to reach Tahiti, where they enjoy the warm sun and friendly native women while waiting for the plants to be harvested. When Bligh orders the ship home, and cuts off the crew's water ration to save the plants, Christian rebels and leads the men in a mutiny, with tragic results.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
This money-pit remake of Mutiny on the Bounty is a failure for but one reason only: Its star, Marlon Brando. At first resistant to the notion of playing Fletcher Christian, the first mate who engineering the mutiny of the HMS Bounty in 1788, Brando was promised a multitude of perks by its producers-promises that were never intended to be kept. Likewise misled was the original director, Carol Reed, who was able to walk off the production. Lewis Milestone inherited the directorial reins, doing the best he could under impossible conditions. In contrast to the clearly defined heroes and villains of the 1935 version of Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), we are offered a Captain Bligh (Trevor Howard) who seems more grouchy than tyrannical, and a foppish Fletcher Christian who is just this side of a female impersonation. Some of the "improvements" made on the original Chris Nordhoff-James Norton Hall novel are laughable, notably Bligh's command that Christian have sex with one of the native girls so as to appease the Tahitian chief and thus expedite the shipment of breadfruit. Running-or walking-179 minutes, Mutiny on the Bounty contains some breathtaking photography and gorgeous scenery, as well as a soaring musical score by Bronislau Kaper, but on the whole is but a shadow of the Oscar-winning 1935 classic. --- Hal Erickson

Best-known as the film whose failure nearly bankrupted MGM, it's not without interest, but like its original audience, many viewers may want to mutiny before the crew does. Marlon Brando stars as Fletcher Christian in this version of the familiar tale of rebellion aboard the HMS Bounty. Made at the peak of Brando's bankability, the film was, in essence, directed by the star, and in deciding to play Christian as an epicene fop, he threw it seriously off kilter. Despite shedding some of his more flagrant mannerisms as Christian edges toward revolt, Brando is not very persuasive as a character that this bunch of tars would back. Aside from the dramatic inertia radiating from an uncharacteristically subdued Bligh (Trevor Howard), the film's general tone of slackness adds to the tedium. Its one positive quality is the breathtaking photography of Robert Surtees, which makes the crew's reluctance to leave the lush island of Tahiti completely credible. --- Michael Costello
