LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
Director Bruce Beresford's LAST DANCE stars Sharon Stone as Cindy Liggett, a lower-class Southern woman who has spent the previous 12 years on death row for killing two of her teenaged classmates. Her legal appeals seem to have run their course, and the judge who is charged with reviewing her case has never pardoned a murderer. However, Rick Hayes (Rob Morrow), the lawyer appointed by the clemency board, begins to examine the records of her original trial and believes there's evidence for a stay of execution. The prospect of spending her remaining years in prison does not appeal to the disillusioned Cindy, though, and she's indifferent to Hayes and resigned to her death. Hayes, motivated both by a personal interest in Liggett, as well as a desire to prove himself to his contemptuous, politically connected brother (Peter Gallagher), refuses to accept her passivity and gradually persuades her to fight for her life.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
The relationship between an unproven lawyer and the female convict he attempts to save from execution is detailed in this death-row drama. Sharon Stone plays against type as Cindy Liggett, convicted of murder at the age of 19, who has spent over a decade in prison awaiting execution. Having resigned herself to her eventual death, she cares little when her case falls into the hands of newly appointed clemency board attorney Rick Hayes (Rob Morrow). Hayes devotes himself to her case, however, and uncovers several inconsistencies regarding her earlier trial. Seeing a chance to save Liggett's life, Hayes fights for a stay of execution but finds himself facing opposition from powerful political figures and even Liggett herself. Largely ignored at the box office, the film suffered in comparison to Dead Man Walking (1995), the Academy Award-winning drama whose treatment of the death penalty theme may still have been fresh in the minds of audiences. --- Judd Blaise

Bruce Beresford's prison movie-courtroom melodrama, a standard entry in the Hollywood genre, makes one nostalgic for his extraordinary Breaker Morant. The script is a by-the-numbers story of a convicted murderer, played by Sharon Stone, whose lawyer, played by Rob Morrow, has found grounds for a possible stay of her imminent execution. Although Beresford keeps things moving along briskly, the predictable story includes too many hokey devices, such as a possible last-minute call from the governor, to be compelling. Stone gives a solid, glamour-free performance as the cynical prisoner, and the rest of the able cast is good, including Peter Gallagher in another of his yuppie-bastard roles, and Breaker Morant's Jack Thompson and Randy Quaid. The film, which had the misfortune of being released not long after the brilliant Dead Man Walking, had a rocky time in theaters. --- Michael Costello
