LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
A young hacker prodigy meets other kids like himself when he and his mother move cross-country and settle in New York City. High school takes on a new light when Dade (Miller) meets a group of misfits and rich kids who hack into computer systems for fun. When one of their group is suddenly arrested, the others band together to take on a corporate hacker disguised as a security officer and attempt to bring down his devious and diabolical plans.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
In this high-tech thriller, Dade Murphy (Jonny Lee Miller) has been fascinated with computers all his life; at the age of 11, he was able to break into the computer network of several top Wall Street investment and banking firms, and he nearly caused a major stock market crash in the process. As punishment, Dade was forbidden to use a computer until his 18th birthday, but now that he's of age, he's diving back into his PC head first. Dade meets up with a group of fellow hackers: tough-talking cyber gamer Kate, aka Acid Burn (Angelina Jolie), junior hacker Jesse Bradford, born prankster Cereal Killer (Matthew Lillard), Nikon (Lawrence Mason), named for his photographic memory, and telephone expert Phantom Phreak (Renoly Santiago). Dade and his pals aren't out to destroy systems or do cybercrime for profit; they simply want to know more about the systems they encounter, and they like raising some good-natured havoc. But in their travels through cyberspace, they discover The Plague (Fisher Stevens), a former hacker turned computer security expert with a huge multinational corporation. The Plague has not only done the unthinkable and gone into anti-hacker enforcement, he's secretly allied himself with a group of criminals and is using his expertise to drain funds from corporate bank accounts and transfer them to himself and his mistress, Margo (Lorraine Bracco). The Plague is also smart enough to leave clues that would lead investigators to someone else; in this case, Dade and his friends --- and has a secret weapon at his disposal, a computer virus that could wipe out the entire world wide web in a matter of minutes. Several sequences for Hackers were shot at New York City's Stuyvesant High School, where coincidentally several months after filming, several students were arrested by F.B.I. agents for their involvement in computer hacking. --- [Synopsis by Mark Deming]

Although a good deal more conversant with real-life computer programming and the Internet than contemporaneous tripe like the Sandra Bullock vehicle The Net, this cyber-thriller still indulges in many of the cardinal sins endemic to the genre: art-directed computer graphics that bear little resemblance to the utilitarian Unix command lines from which most hackers would operate, especially at the time the film was released; preposterously dressed geek-chic archetypes in the place of believable-looking characters; clumsy computer-world exposition passed off as dialogue; and the kind of standard-issue plot twists and deux ex machina that have been driving action flicks since their inception. Nevertheless, Hackers entertains the same way as the Matthew Broderick classics Wargames and, to a lesser extent, Ferris Bueller's Day Off: by providing a machine-age twist on traditional adolescent power fantasies. It's fun to imagine that a bunch of teens armed with 1200-baud modems could pose a real danger to the government or some corporate bad guys; indeed, the rest of the '90s bore witness to the fact that such a premise could often come true. Chief geek Jonny Lee Miller and cyber-babe Angelina Jolie; who met on the set and later briefly wed; play things too deadly serious to be much fun. But their colorful cast of computer cronies, including blase villain Lorraine Bracco and typically smirky Matthew Lillard, provide enough techie thrills and (occasionally intentional) laughs to keep the film from collapsing under the weight of its own cutting-edge pretensions. A classic of the "cheesy" aesthetic upon its release, Hackers remains a wink-laden rental favorite among Generation Irony. --- [Review by Brian Dillard]
