LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
GREYSTOKE is a spellbinding screen version of Edgar Rice Burroughs's 1914 classic tale. Tarzan (Christopher Lambert), the seventh Earl of Greystoke, is raised by a family of apes after he is lost as a child in the jungles of Africa. Captain Phillipe D'Arnot (Ian Holm), a Belgian explorer, discovers the adult Tarzan, now lord of the apes, and reintroduces him to the English language and to the British aristocracy. Tarzan becomes John Clayton and is taken to meet his elderly grandfather, the sixth Earl of Greystoke (Ralph Richardson), and his beautiful American ward, Jane Porter (Andie MacDowell). Living in a grand estate instead of in the trees of the African jungle proves daunting for the struggling student of British formality, but he is protected by his loving and eccentric grandfather. Jane continues to teach him about life in British society and before long has captivated John, who must learn how to deal with the strong emotions of human love. John and Jane begin their courtship despite the disapproval of British high society and are eventually engaged to be married. In the wake of family tragedy, John is forced to face his responsibility to the Greystoke family, but he is unable to reconcile his mounting distaste for modern civilization. Ultimately, he finds himself torn between his animal and human families and is forced to make a profound decision about his future. Director Hugh Hudson's film features astounding special effects makeup (courtesy of Rick Baker) and beautiful photography of the remote jungles of Cameroon and the British countryside.

Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes is a reverent retelling of the Edgar Rice Burroughs original, with a 1980s-sensibilities slant. Shipwrecked on the coast of Africa, Lord Jack Clayton (Paul Geoffrey) and his pregnant wife Lady Alice (Cheryl Campbell) attempt to survive in the hostile environment, but both die shortly after the birth of their son John. Abandoned in the wilderness, the orphaned John is adopted by a family of rather highly evolved apes, and raised as one of their own. Years later, John-now known as Tarzan, and now played by Christopher Lambert-comes across a party of white hunters. Rescuing one of the intruders, Belgian Captain Phillipe D'Arnot (Ian Holm) from a horrible death , Tarzan is taught to speak English by the grateful D'Arnot. Coming across the remains and possessions of Tarzan's parents, D'Arnot discovers that the Lord of the Jungle is actually the Earl of Greystoke. Brought back to England, Tarzan is introduced to society, where his crude, apelike manners offend everyone---except the likeable (and painfully senile) 6th Lord of Greystoke (Ralph Richardson, in his final film role) and Greystoke's American ward, Jane Porter (Andie McDowell, whose Southern-fried voice is dubbed by Glenn Close). Disturbed at the notion of Tarzan's inheriting Greystoke manner, his more greedy relatives begin plotting against him. But it is Tarzan himself who decides that he cannot adapt himself to England-especially after a painful reunion with his ape foster father, imprisoned in a science-lab cage. Renouncing his title, Tarzan returns to the jungle, with Jane by his side. --- Hal Erickson

The phrase "ponderous, high-minded summer entertainment" rarely comes to mind in the post-Lucas movie world, but the 1984 turkey Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes earns every word of it. Hugh Hudson's ludicrous attempt to update the Tarzan legend for a more savvy '80s audience digs up plenty of crusty fictions as it ignores all of the pulp of the best Tarzan serials. After a clumsy but lush opening passage showing the young boy being raised among the apes --- which no doubt aspires to the poetry of 2001's opening sequence but ends up closer to the ersatz grunts and moans of Quest for Fire --- the movie stalls completely with its stuffy, starched, Merchant-Ivory-style treatise on the "civilized" world. What's left is a sumptuous, embalmed period piece, dotted with infamously inept performances from Christopher Lambert and Andie MacDowell (who, like Jessica Lange and Michelle Pfeiffer before her, managed to survive such an inauspicious Hollywood starring debut). --- Michael Hastings
