LaserDisc Movie Review:
The film begins with Magnolia, daughter of Captain Andy Hawks and his domineering wife Parthy, enjoying her childhood aboard her father's show boat. Parthy, irritated over the supposed influence of leading lady Julie (Magnolia's idol and best friend) fires her, despite her husband's objections. Many years later, Magnolia is a young woman and becomes a leading lady. Her leading man is Gaylord Ravenal, a riverboat gambler with whom she falls in love and elopes. But the sudden and unexpected death of Captain Andy forces the couple to leave the boat and move to Chicago rather than endure the disapproving Parthy, and Ravenal's gambling luck soon runs out. Then, Parthy announces she's coming to visit.

With SHOW BOAT, horror maven James Whale (FRANKENSTEIN, THE INVISIBLE MAN) returns to the stage-adaptation genre of his first film (JOURNEY'S END). The second film version of the 1926 Edna Ferber novel and 1927 Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein musical takes place in the early 1900s on Cap'n Andy Hawks's (Charles Winninger) Mississippi River show boat. Life is good for the family-like show boat troupe that includes married lead actors Julie (Helen Morgan) and Steve (Donald Cook) and servants Queenie (Hattie McDaniel) and Joe (Paul Robeson). However, when a disgruntled boatman reveals that Julie is of mixed race, she and her husband are fired. Julie's best friend, the captain's daughter, Magnolia (Irene Dunne), is devastated but is given the opportunity she has been begging for--to act on the stage. Magnolia's sadness is relieved by the arrival of dashing gambler Gaylord Ravenal (Allan Jones), who is cast as her leading man. The two fall in love and leave the show boat filled with dreams--but life has other plans for them. A fascinating tale about show business, friendship and love, and the inequities of race, SHOW BOAT is an indisputable classic filled with unforgettable songs.

Movie Review for LaserDisc LD:
This vivacious remake of the Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein musical (based on an Edna Ferber novel) about life on a Mississippi riverboat tracks the hardships of Julie Laverne (Ava Gardner), a mulatto trying to pass for white while also following the course of a tumultuous love between a captain's daughter, Magnolia Hawks (Kathryn Grayson), and an itinerant gambler, Gaylord Ravenal (Howard Keel). Gardner (with help from Annette Warren, whose voice was overdubbed for Gardner's songs) gives a heartbreaking performance, and Grayson's clear, pure voice soars, set off magnificently by Keel's rich baritone. The film stands as a classic for both its surprising emotional impact and its well-known score, featuring timeless gems such as "Old Man River" and "Can't Help Lovin' that Man of Mine."
