Everyone who tuned into The Martian Chronicles during its three-day run in January of 1980 sincerely hoped that it would be the ne plus ultra of televised sci-fi/fantasy. That it fell short of this goal was not the fault of the actors but of the script, which reduced Ray Bradbury's complex original work into typical TV-movie banality. Further hurting the project were the special effects, which fluctuate between the heights of the original Star Trek and the depth of Lost in Space. Part One is set in the year 1999. NATO (remember NATO?) plans to explore and colonize the planet Mars. Two expeditions head for the Red Planet, never to return. A third expedition is headed by Col. John Wilder (Rock Hudson), who does not expect to find living Martians awaiting him.

Part One of the three-chapter miniseries The Martian Chronicles, based on the works of Ray Bradbury, established that all existing Martians have died out, permitting Earth to send out a colonizing expedition. In Part Two, the first batch of Earthlings explores the Red planet. The colonists discover to their amazement that Mars is populated with familiar persons from their own individual pasts. Thus does the second chapter of Chronicles segue into an antiseptic adaptation of the Ray Bradbury classic Mars is Heaven. Part Three of Martian Chronicles, originally telecast on January 29, 1980, was set in the year 2007, eight years after the events of Part Two.

The third chapter of the three-part TV adaptation of Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles debuted on January 29, 1980. We have now reached the year 2007. Most of the original Martians have died out, thanks largely to human interference. The earthlings who now populate the Red Planet have no way of returning "home"....not since the Earth was destroyed by a nuclear war. The goal now is preservation of the species at hand. Meanwhile, Wilder (Rock Hudson), leader of the human colony, uncovers a vital secret....and confronts his first Martian. Along with parts one and two, part three of The Martian Chronicles has been amalgamated into one overlong feature film on videocassette. --- Hal Erickson
