Barbra Streisand returns as Fanny Brice in this sequel to the award-winning musical FUNNY GIRL. In depression-era New York, the hugely successful entertainer's long-running show is closing and her marriage with playboy Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif) is over. Fanny finds herself out of work and looking for material when she meets Billy Rose (James Caan), a hustling nightclub owner and songwriter who is eager to work with the talented star. Billy and Fanny begin a working relationship that leads to the development of a new Broadway show with outlandish and ominous beginnings. With the advice of the experienced Fanny, Billy revamps the show, and it becomes an instant success. Their working relationship quickly becomes a loving relationship as Billy falls for the free-spirited star and Fanny falls for a compatible friend. Billy and Fanny marry and continue to work together on a series of smash hits, but as time goes on the pair spends less and less time together, too busy working to realize that the marriage is falling apart. For Fanny their union is based on friendship--she cannot truly love Billy until she realizes that her passion for Nick is over, and by then it might be too late to rescue her marriage.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
Barbra Streisand's 1975 follow-up to her star-making 1968 vehicle Funny Girl is a lot more worthwhile than most movie sequels. Funny Girl was a fanciful retelling of the first forty years or so in the life of fabled comedienne Fanny Brice (1891-1951); Funny Lady picks up where the first film leaves off, following Fanny into the 1940s. Far more sophisticated and imperious than she'd been in Funny Girl, Streisand's magnetic performance compensates for her character's decreased charm. Fanny's first husband, gambler Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif), makes a few token appearances, while the lion's share of the film's romantic angle is dominated by Fanny's second hubby, impresario Billy Rose (James Caan). The best sequence involves a disastrous out-of-town tryout for one of Fanny's stage vehicles, replete with collapsing sets and a runaway bull. Most of the songs included herein are old standards, with the notable exceptions of Kander and Ebb's "How Lucky Can You Get " and "I Like Him/I Like Her". The film was produced by Ray Stark, the real life son-in-law of Fanny Brice. --- Hal Erickson

Funny Lady, the popular sequel to Funny Girl, is quite entertaining, despite an overly familiar story. Funny Girl's story was no more original, but the determined energy of film novice Barbra Streisand, combined with the superb work of director William Wyler, made the clichs less obvious. Here, Herbert Ross' direction is more professional and capable than inspired, and Streisand's performance is assured and polished rather than dazzling, with the result that the screenplay's flaws are more apparent. Streisand has her part down pat by now and she knows what buttons to push and when to push them. The physical characteristics are all there the practiced tilting of the head, the stiffening of the jaw as she rolls a lyric around before spitting it out, the thrusting of the arms but they're put to good use and come across as less mannered than they do at other times. Vocally, she's great; "How Lucky Can You Get " seethes, "Let's Hear It for Me" is wonderfully joyous, and "Isn't This Better" is a lovely, melancholy portrait of a woman who can't admit she's fooling herself. James Caan is stuck with a fairly thankless role, but makes the most of it and is one of Streisand's better sparring partners. Many of the musical numbers are unfortunately truncated, but the big production number, "Great Day," is presented whole, to good effect. On the whole, Funny Lady's virtues make up for its shortcomings. --- Craig Butler
